What happened to those 70-degree nights? It’s the beginning of fall, and you’ve noticed a crisp change in the weather – now is the perfect time to begin winterizing your home before the arctic temperatures hit!

The phrase “winterize your home” sounds daunting, leading to many people ignoring the necessary upkeep needed to prepare your home for the cold, snowy months at the end of the year. Luckily, there are many easy ways to winterize your home without breaking your back – or the bank!

Lock all doors and windows

Something as easy as turning the deadbolt will make your home that much warmer during the winter. A locked window and door means a tighter seal around that would-be opening, preventing cold air from entering the house.

Buy a door sweep for your front door

One more way to seal any cracks that may let in that arctic breeze. Door sweeps can be found at any local hardware store and are relatively simple to install.

Stock up on winter tools and gear BEFORE winter

Shovels, gloves, coats, sand, scarfs – the best time to buy these winter-weather necessities is in early fall, when the prices aren’t soaring and there’s a good chance they won’t be sold out. Plus, if an unexpected ice storm hits, you may be stuck at home without any way of clearing off your driveway!

Empty and store your water hoses

Simply putting your garden hoses in the shed or garage may not be enough to keep them from splitting if the temperature is cold enough outside – you need to completely drain your hoses of any water that may have accumulated from being attached to the faucet. Any leftover water inside the hose will freeze, expand, and destroy it!

Insulate as many windows as possible

There are many creative ways to insulate a window – Styrofoam and tape, anyone? – but however you do it, make sure your completely insulated in places like the attic or basement before the winter winds hit. Keeping these windows covered will save you big on heating costs.
